Finland says any US move against Greenland risks serious repercussions
Speaking to Finnish media, Hakkanen highlighted the importance of alliances built on trust, noting that American global influence relies heavily on political credibility with partner nations.
“All allies in Asia, Europe and the Middle East are watching extremely closely how allies are treated in different parts of the world. If something unusual were done to any allied country within any network, it would have serious ripple effects on the United States’ overwhelming advantage over China. China does not have a similarly reliable global alliance network like the United States does,” he said.
While acknowledging that increased US investment in Arctic security is positive, Hakkanen stressed that decisions involving Greenland, an autonomous territory under Danish jurisdiction, should ultimately be made by Denmark. The minister’s comments come amid repeated public statements from US leaders expressing interest in taking control of Greenland, with military intervention not ruled out, following a recent US operation in Venezuela.
Hakkanen also spoke about the situation in Venezuela, underscoring the need to respect international law and the right of self-determination. “Maduro was a dictator and did not have a mandate from his people. At the same time, international law and the right to self-determination should be respected. That is absolutely clear," he said, noting that these developments are unlikely to significantly affect the behavior of Russia or China.
According to reports, Hakkanen’s remarks reflect Finland’s position that, despite US interest in Arctic territories, adherence to international norms and respect for sovereignty remain essential, while global powers monitor such actions closely for potential diplomatic consequences.
